Putin orders tactical nuclear weapon drills to deter the West
  + stars: | 2024-05-06 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +5 min
Russia's defense ministry said it would hold military drills including practice for the preparation and deployment for use of non-strategic nuclear weapons. "During the exercise, a set of measures will be carried out to practice the issues of preparation and use of non-strategic nuclear weapons," the ministry said. Russia and the United States are by far the world's biggest nuclear powers, holding more than 10,600 of the world's 12,100 nuclear warheads. No power has used nuclear weapons in war since the United States unleashed the first atomic bomb attacks on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. Major nuclear powers routinely check their nuclear weapons but very rarely publicly link such exercises to specific perceived threats in the way that Russia has.

Mr. Netanyahu now must make a choice. Will he respond to Iran with a forceful counterattack and potentially entangle Israel and other countries in a broader war? No Israeli leader has warned about Iran so consistently as Mr. Netanyahu or, for that matter, has spent so long in office. Since his first year in office in 1996, Mr. Netanyahu warned that a nuclear Iran would be catastrophic and that time was running out. It was never clear if Mr. Netanyahu was bluffing, and the prospect of an imminent strike receded.

The conversation around ride-hailing driver pay has been heating up across the country over the past year. AdvertisementLoren Balazs, a full-time driver in Minneapolis, told BI he's worried the city council's proposal would hurt his ride-hailing business. The study estimated that a minimum pay rate of $1.21 per mile and $0.49 per minute would guarantee drivers earned the city's minimum wage. Russia's Ryabkov warns US against entering new arms race
  + stars: | 2023-11-29 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Sergei Ryabkov, Russia's deputy foreign minister in charge of ties with the U.S., non-proliferation and arms control, told the Izvestia daily that present circumstances were not "conducive" to arms talks with Washington. "If the United States expects to win the next arms race, repeating to some extent the experience of the presidency of Ronald Reagan ... then the Americans are mistaken," Izvestia cited Ryabkov as saying. Russia's ties with many Western countries deteriorated after its full-scale invasion on Ukraine in February 2022, with Moscow now saying it is fighting what it calls the "collective West" in Ukraine. Ryabkov reiterated Russia's position that Moscow was not threatening a military conflict with NATO, but said a possible escalation depended on the action of the alliance. "The situation is not conducive to exchanging signals (on arms controls), even on such key issues," Ryabkov said.

It was Angermayer who introduced Bisslinger to Thiel at the party, Thiel would later tell the FBI. After some small talk, Bisslinger made a pitch to Thiel: Thiel should travel to Russia to attend the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. If Thiel chose to attend, Bisslinger said, Bisslinger would arrange for him to meet privately with Putin. Biden’s Rule of Engagement: Don’t

Leaders of Egypt and Jordan and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called off a planned summit with President Joe Biden. “Don’t,” he said, warning Iran as well as the U.S.-designated terror group Hezbollah that runs Lebanon and any others from intensifying the crisis by escalating their involvement. But perhaps most effective of all, experts say, is the single word Biden continues to repeat: Don’t. “When the president says, ‘Don't,’ and then moves an aircraft carrier, that looks good. Middle East analysts go back to the point that Hezbollah and Iran likely don’t want to escalate the war either.

Tom Sosnoff, the co-founder of Thinkorswim and Tastytrade, is a longtime advocate of options trading. One feature of options is they allow you to trade costly underlying securities with a fraction of the money. Sosnoff says an options trader can get that same exposure for as little as $250. However, Sosnoff prefers a riskier trade that he says is more capital-efficient — one he considers the simplest option strategy with the highest probability of profit. The value of a car — or an option's underlying security, like a stock — could, in theory, go to zero, leaving the investor holding the bag.

Of the 60,000 tons of produce grown on Huizinga's land last year, 50,000 tons was sent abroad through the grain deal. In total, Ukraine has been able to export 33 million tons of agricultural products through the deal. Some of Ukraine's western neighbours have restricted imports of Ukrainian grain under pressure from their farmers, who said they were suffering from the added competition. Ukraine expects to harvest 44 million tons of grain this year, down from a record 86 million-ton harvest in 2021. Both Marchuk and Huizinga believe grain shipments should continue through the Black Sea even without Russia's participation in the deal.

[1/3] Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko speak during a meeting at the Bocharov Ruchei residence in Sochi, Russia June 9, 2023. Putin announced in March he had agreed to deploy such weapons in Belarus, pointing to U.S deployment of tactical nuclear weapons in a host of European countries over many decades. It is still unclear where the Russian nuclear warheads - which will remain under Russian control - will be kept in Belarus. RANGEPutin, who is the ultimate decision maker on any nuclear launch, said Iskander mobile short-range ballistic missiles, which can deliver nuclear warheads, had already been handed over to Belarus. Putin has repeatedly raised the issue of U.S. B61 tactical nuclear warheads deployed at bases in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy and Turkey.

Disney did not specifically blame DeSantis for the move, partly citing “changing business conditions.” But the message was clear. In keeping with his bruising political persona, DeSantis reacted defiantly to Disney’s announcement that it would halt the office project. “Ron DeSantis’ failed war on Disney has done little for his limping shadow campaign and now is doing even less for Florida’s economy,” the Trump campaign said in a statement. Another possible GOP primary candidate, former Vice President Mike Pence, also leveraged the Disney announcement to jab DeSantis. Given his political exposure on Disney and the combative political image that is central to his White House hopes, DeSantis probably has no option but to further escalate the showdown.
Disney Pulls Plug on $1 Billion Development in Florida

Ron DeSantis of Florida “anti-business” for his scorched-earth attempt to tighten oversight of the company’s theme park resort near Orlando. Last month, when Disney sued the governor and his allies for what it called “a targeted campaign of government retaliation,” the company made clear that $17 billion in planned investment in Walt Disney World was on the line. “Does the state want us to invest more, employ more people, and pay more taxes, or not?” Robert A. Iger, Disney’s chief executive, said on an earnings-related conference call with analysts last week. On Thursday, Mr. Iger and Josh D’Amaro, Disney’s theme park and consumer products chairman, showed that they were not bluffing, pulling the plug on a nearly $1 billion office complex that was scheduled for construction in Orlando. It would have brought more than 2,000 jobs to the region, with $120,000 as the average salary, according to an estimate from the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.
"There's an oversupply of wheat in Russia right now," he said. The Teucrium Wheat Fund (WEAT) , for example, spreads futures contracts across multiple maturities instead of concentrating holdings in front-month futures. In addition to WEAT, Teucrium offers four other ETFs with agricultural exposure: CORN , CANE and SOYB , as well as the Teucrium Agricultural Fund (TAGS) . "And so, without [the Black Sea Grain Initiative], shipping will become uncertain, because you'll be in a war zone." However, prolonged conflict or expansion of the conflict could continue to harm Ukraine grain production, he said, underpinning valuation uncertainty for the commodity regardless of the current oversupply.
CNN —Former President Donald Trump is considering sitting out one or both of the first two Republican primary debates, three sources told CNN. Julian Zelizer CNNMeanwhile, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) doesn’t have any primary debates scheduled – a move that helps President Joe Biden and hurts his challengers Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Marianne Williamson. That would be a departure from the norm, since debates have been a big part of presidential politics since World War II. Meanwhile, the Republican primary debates in 2016 often felt like professional wrestling matches as Trump hammered away at a crowded field. The 2020 debates were not quite as thrilling, even though they continued to play a key role in the election.
Friction has already increased as the Teamsters accused UPS of slow-walking local negotiations. UPS said that the parties have traditionally worked on the national and supplemental contracts simultaneously and are ready to negotiate. In order to avoid a promised strike, O'Brien has said he wants better pay for part-time workers, an end to a lower-paid classification of weekend drivers, and a list of other demands. This is UPS CEO Carol Tomé's first union negotiation and she has said that the parties are not as opposed as they seem. Bone up on the issues the Teamsters have threatened to strike over with the stories below.
Israel's Netanyahu buys time, but is still in a fix

It shows the dilemma facing Israel's longest-serving prime minister, who managed a comeback last year, brushing aside an ongoing corruption scandal and the political obituaries written after his last coalition collapsed in 2020. Announcing the delay of the judicial law on television, Netanyahu cited the wisdom of Solomon to say he would extend a hand for dialogue. With polls showing his coalition would lose any new election, Netanyahu can meanwhile count on little goodwill from old foes and former allies still sore from previous encounters. Netanyahu describes the cases as politically motivated, denies wrongdoing and says they are not linked to his judicial reforms. His coalition partners include hard-right supporters of Jewish settlers, who have dismayed Israel's foreign allies with harsh statements about Palestinians.
A test launch of Russia's nuclear Sarmat missile appears to have failed, CNN reported Tuesday. The Sarmat ICBM is among the more modern weapons in Russia's nuclear arsenal. The RS-28 Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile, which NATO has nicknamed "Satan II", is among the more modern weapons in Russia's nuclear arsenal. Measuring around 112 feet long and weighing just over 211 tons, the liquid-fuel ICBM is capable of carrying more than a dozen nuclear warheads, which can destroy entire cities, VICE News reported. Several experts told CNN in April that Putin's Sarmat test launches were meant to distract from Russia's recent military failures in Ukraine.
The market’s big comeback in January is indicative of one thing: Investors don’t believe the Federal Reserve is going to keep interest rates high for long. Stock and bond prices have jumped to start the year. Particularly risky assets have run up even faster.

A look at the day ahead in markets from Amanda Cooper, Europe breaking news editor. Big Tech royalty in the form of Apple (AAPL.O), Alphabet (GOOGL.O) and Amazon (AMZN.O) deliver earnings. The S&P itself is heading for a 6.1% rise this month - which would mark its best January since 2019. The first month of the year tends to be one of the strongest anyway, according to Refinitiv data. Even in strong Januarys, such as that of 2019, when the index rose by 7%, 10-year yields fell only 6 bps.
Russia's former president said his country could use nuclear weapons if it loses in Ukraine. "The loss of a nuclear power in a conventional war can provoke the outbreak of a nuclear war. Medvedev has previously suggested that his country could use nuclear weapons. Russia's President Vladimir Putin, as well as some of his officials, have, in the past, threatened the use of nuclear weapons. Putin said in December that Russia would not use nuclear weapons unprovoked, adding that Russia had not "gone mad" and would not be the first country to use them, as the BBC reported.
Republicans are using the debt ceiling as leverage to achieve spending cuts on Democratic priorities. But failing to raise the debt ceiling by the summer could cause the US to default on its debt. Consequences of default are dire, and Biden has urged the GOP to not bargain with the debt limit. "Failure to raise the debt limit will not reduce our debt, but it would wreck the economy if it led to a default. "When you talk about the trillion dollar platinum coin, it sounds very silly — and it is really silly!"
Slater Vance joined in on a TikTok trend where users lie about celebrity deaths to their parents. Many social media users have called the trend distasteful. That's what 16-year-old Slater Vance learned last week, after joining in on it using his own famous parents: actors Angela Bassett and Courtney B. Vance. The trend involves users pranking their families on camera, pretending that celebrities — usually ones beloved to their parents — have died. "Angela Bassett and Courtney B. Vance just put an end to that TikTok trend and we owe them a debt of gratitude," one user said.
UPS drivers will be ready to strike next summer, said the Teamsters general president Sean O'Brien. The process left many members disenchanted with their union, multiple UPS drivers told Insider. Partly as a reaction to those grumblings, Teamsters lifer Sean O'Brien was elected to take over the union's leadership last year. And for months, O'Brien has openly spoken about UPS drivers going on strike for the first time in 25 years. O'Brien has said publicly several times that he plans to use the UPS contract negotiations as an example for other workforces that have yet to unionize — especially Amazon.
